Cerebrovascular Society of India is a society comprising of Neurosurgeons, Interventional Neuroradiologists and Neurologists dedicated to the management and research in the fields cerebrovascular surgery and stroke.
The purpose of the CVSI is to advance education, research and patient care in the area of cerebrovascular disease. Through our activities, we strive to promote the highest standards of patient management, education and research in the field of cerebrovascular surgery. We welcome all the professionals interested in the field of cerebrovascular surgery and stroke.
The goal of CVSI is to bring further knowledge and research in the fields of brain aneurysms, arteriovenous malformations, stroke, brain hemorrhage and other disabling conditions of the blood vessels of the brain. We plan to be a knowledge resource for both professionals and public interested in the field of cerebrovascular surgery. Any suggestions or feedback are welcome here.
Management of Cerebrovascular diseases had been the main thrust in clinical work and research activities at many centers in the country for a long time. The quantum of patients with these ailments reporting at various departments in the country justified a strong need to formulate a society devoted to the knowledge and management of neurovascular problems.
Cerebrovascular Society of India was formulated in year 2000 at annual conference of Neurological Society of India in Chennai. The founder officials were Dr. A.K. Banerji (President), Dr. D. Rout (Vice President) and Dr. B.K. Misra, (Hony. Secretary). The other founder executives were Dr. A. Raja, Dr.V.K. Jain, Dr. A.N Jha, Dr. R.N. Bhattacharya and Dr. S.N. Mathuriya.
The aims of the society are to study and discuss the issues related to neurovascular disorders. It is desired to formulate diagnostic and therapeutic protocols for all Neurovascular problems under one umbrella at the annual meeting. The knowledge has to be comprehensive commencing from basic sciences to the latest diagnostic and therapeutic modalities appropriate for these lesions. The first meeting was organized by Dr. Basant Misra at Mumbai. Subsequent annual meetings were organized at various places in the country by rotation, by the faculty members who have a special interest in the cerebrovascular surgery. These were attended by delegates both from India and abroad, and these conferences were interactive and educative. Prof Hirotoshi Sano from Fujita Health University, Japan, has been a regular guest from oversease at all the meetings. The initial meetings were for 1 to 1 ½ day, subsequently pre-conference workshops were introduced, where surgical and interventional techniques were demonstrated by various national and international faculty.
At all the meetings, it is customary to schedule a oration lecture by leaders in the field in names of founder President and vice President, in alternate years. The last meeting held at AIIMS New Delhi, in October 2011, was a grand success. There has been a continuous rise in the number of centers providing care for all cerebrovascular problems. Gradually comprehensive management could be organized on time. This has been made possible by public and physician education, quick arrival/ referral, investigations, and surgery/endovascular therapy. Gamma Knife therapy for neurovascular diseases is now available at various centers, both in public and private sectors. However, there is a need to organize training courses for management of complex neurovascular diseases (aneurysms, Moya Moya, AVMs, carotid artery disease etc). These should include surgery and endovascular techniques for these lesions.
The need of the hour is to conduct training courses for a specified desired period on endovascular therapy for intracranial aneurysms .At these courses a structured training should be imparted to Neuroradiologists, eurosurgeons and Neurologists. Basics of neurodiagnostics and endovascular techniques should be included in M.Ch. curriculum and more so through the fellowship courses. The society has a responsibility to create all these programs in future.
There is also a need to coordinate with stroke physicians to discuss the management of occlusive cerebrovascular disease. Continuous efforts will help us to achieve our goal in keeping at par with the world in comprehensive management of all neurovascular problems including hemorrhagic and occlusive stroke in the same society or in various subsections.
